As I've drawn many different faces - some familiar, some not - I've come to recognize that the more personally connected I feel to the face that I am drawing, the better that drawing turns out. I think this is because I have am putting my heart into it. And this doesn't just happen when I'm drawing my precious little sister. It also happens when there is a story connected to the picture I am drawing. Most of the people that have commissioned to do a portrait for them have provided me with a story or background to the picture they give me. A lot of times this person in the picture is a loved one that has passed away, or it is of someone's beloved child or other relative. I even did one piece with the sensitive message of child abuse. I've come to realize that with a story or message to back up my work, I am able to put forth a lot more heart, effort, and time into that piece because I am then emotionally conscious of the importance behind it.
